It’s not every day you get the chance see and smell a Kentucky Coffeetree flower. This fast growing tree reaches 60-70 feet tall, bringing its June flowers far out of reach for a good sniff.
But the young Kentucky Coffeetree at the Enabling Garden began blooming at nose height the first of June. The exotic fragrance is citrus and spicy at the same time.
The most exciting part is the seed pods that will hopefully follow. The Kentucky Coffeetree is a fun tree to grow from seed.
Fun Fact: While the seeds are toxic raw, people used to roast the seeds to make a coffee substitute when real coffee was scarce.
